Influence of Repeated Oxytocin Injections on Composition of Dairy Cows' Milk1

ABSTRACT

Milk fat, solids-not-fat, protein, and lactose were determined in milk from normal milking, followed by four successive intravenous oxytocic injections at 20-minute intervals. Milk fat per cent increased through the first oxytocic sample, then decreased to approximately the fat content of milk obtained by normal milking procedures. Solids-not-fat, protein, and lactose were all significantly (P < 0.01) lower in milk removed after the injection of oxytocin than in the samples taken during normal milking. Milk yield approached a constant level with repeated injections of oxytocin, indicating a constant rate of secretion. Rate of secretion approached the rate needed to synthesize the milk produced daily by these cows.
