ABSTRACT
Communication. Is there a gap or barrier? Is communication the problem in getting interest and participation at our conventions? I have attended several Southern Region Student Branch conventions and one National. I have been impressed by the interest and enthusiasm shown by the student affiliate officers and members at all these meetings and have come away feeling that I really wanted to be involved. If I feel this way and see others there apparently similarly inspired, then why . . . why do we have only 20 to 25 members attending these well-prepared and worthwhile programs?
Frank Olivas, newly elected president of the Southern Region Student Branch, first brought this idea of a communications "problem" to my attention while attending the National in Minnesota. This was my first National, and impressed me as being a successful one, due to the leadership of a dynamic president, George Meyers. However, Frank's comments could only make me think—just what a fantastic program it could have been with a hundred members there, representing at least 25 colleges from throughout this country, to exchange ideas and to meet in competition.
