In the midst of winter, when snow covers the ground and the temperature takes its deepest plunges, a casual observer may get the impression that most of nature is asleep. But wildlife and nature enthusiasts know that, even then, nature's functions go on, though hidden, as inexorable forces and instincts keep plants and animals busy with the preparations and chores that soon will culminate in the frenzy and splendors of spring.
Using a bit of license one can draw an analogy between these happenings in nature and the current activities in the American Dairy Science Association leading up to the next Annual Meeting. They are not apparent to all members but they are humming just the same. What publication of the Journal of Dairy Science does for the prestige of our Association, the Annual Meeting does for its esprit de corps. It helps reassert the faith and interest in our profession, it stimulates scientific inquiry and, above all, it gives us that once-a-year opportunity to chat with old friends, former colleagues and new acquaintances in the informal and relaxed atmosphere which lends special charm to our Annual Meeting.
