ABSTRACT
Pancreatic juice samples, collected from male dairy calves fitted with pancreatic duct cannulae, were analyzed for amylase. In one experiment calves were fed milk or milk replacer, hay and calf starter to eight weeks of age, then hay and calf starter. Samples were collected at different intervals after feeding, at various times during day and night, and at various ages to 163 days. In another experiment, the effect of protein source was studied in calves to 21 days of age.
The pancreatic juice amylase concentrations varied widely, with no significant trend related to time of day or time after feeding, but with an increase with increase in age. Pancreatic juice flow rates increased with age and were highest at six hours after feeding. Amylase concentrations and flow rates were higher for calves fed diets in which all of the protein was from milk than for calves fed some soybean protein. Based on an enzyme reaction time of 20 minutes, the amount of reducing activity, expressed as grams of glucose formed from soluble starch per 24 hours, was always less than 12 for calves up to 100 days of age and ranged to 220 for a 163-day-old calf.
