Inheritance of Part Lactation in Hariana Cattle1

Mukhtiar Singh2 and R. M. Acharya

College of Animal Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Hissar, India

ABSTRACT

From intrasire regression of daughter on dam and correlations between paternal sisters for milk in first lactation of 452 Hariana cows, the fifth month had the highest heritability and was comparable with that of total lactation production. Heritabilities of cumulative monthly yields increased with each month to the eighth month; however, major gain was from cumulating production of first four to five months. Phenotypic relationship between monthly production and total production was largest for the third month but differed a little from that of the fourth to seventh months. Most of the genetic correlations of monthly and cumulative monthly production with total production approached unity. Expected correlated response in total lactation production for selection on monthly and cumulative monthly production was highest for the fifth month.
