ABSTRACT

Highest Honor Conferred on J. L. Lush

Professor Jay L. Lush of Iowa State University was one of 12 who received the National Medal of Science for 1968. President Johnson made the awards in the East Room of The White House on January 17, 1969. This medal was established by Congress in 1959 but was first awarded in 1962. The 12 recipients this year bring the total number of awards to about 50. Professor Lush was one of this year's five who were listed as in the Biological Sciences. His citation was for "bringing the science of genetics to bear upon animal breeding."

The varied problems on which he has worked have involved nearly all species of farm animals in one way or another. His research on dairy cattle began nearly 50 years ago at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. Much of his research since coming to Iowa State University in 1930 was with dairy cattle and pigs.
