ABSTRACT
Throughout most of the South dairy herds are scattered, with large numbers of dairy herds confined to one or two areas in a few states. This low concentration of dairy herds has compounded problems in organizing production testing. This situation and shifting of large numbers of dairymen in the South from other agricultural enterprises has not been an ideal situation for organization.
Organization
Basically, Dairy Herd Improvement Association groups in the South have been organized as cooperatives on a county basis; however, there has been no uniformity, since each state had to adapt organizational structures for its conditions. In one state the production testing program is operated without any formal organization; instead, it is conducted on a county extension demonstration basis.
In some states, especially Alabama and Mississippi, multiple county cooperatives have been organized in areas of few dairy herds. Grouping counties has made it possible to bring together enough herds to financially support a testing Association.
