ABSTRACT
Almost 30 years ago it was my privilege to present the keynote address at the Annual Meeting of the American Dairy Science Association at the University of Vermont. Its title was DAIRY PRODUCTION MILESTONES and it was concerned with tracing the historical and scientific development of the dairy industry in the United States. Today I am honored on this, my last Dairy Day as an active member of the Research and Development Center family, by being asked to appear on the program of the 41st Annual Dairy Day and to have this coincide with the first day of Open House Week.
My invitation to speak here today was accompanied by a suggestion that I extend the DAIRY PRODUCTION MILESTONES address through the years since 1941, when it was given, until the present. This I will do only in a limited way since, on an occasion like this, it would seem more pertinent to peer through the lookingglass, just as Alice did in that wonderful fairytale, rather than to have the mirror reflect only things of the past and present.
1 Keynote address, Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, Wooster. Delivered on opening day, Dairy Day, August 9, 1968.
