Arthur M. Hartman Retires
Arthur M. Hartman was recently feted by his fellow workers in recognition of his retirement after 52 years of service in the United States Department of Agriculture. Mr. Hartman started his career with the USDA as a clerk at Beltsville in 1917. Through his curiosity, concern, and persistent efforts, he is now recognized as a leader in his field of research.
Mr. Hartman has made many contributions to the field of nutritional biochemistry during his 52-year career as a research chemist in the United States Department of Agriculture. He and his coworkers have worked on and solved numerous problems associated with the nutritive value of milk and milk products, and particularly on the basic aspects of the role of vitamin B12 in the metabolism of animals. The results of these investigations have been published in 71 scientific articles, including 9 that were invitational papers.
Among his most significant contributions were those related to the discovery and isolation of vitamin B12.
