ABSTRACT
President Erb and fellow members in the American Dairy Science Association:
The honor of speaking to you this evening actually gravitated to me because Secretary Hardin's overly crowded schedule prevented his accepting your kind invitation. These circumstances in no way, however, detract from my appreciation of this opportunity. It is a privilege to bring you the greetings and best wishes of the Secretary for this, your Sixty-fourth Annual Meeting, and to discuss with you the larger role that some of us believe professional societies such as this one can play in public decisions.
My choice of title, The Politics of Dairy Science, may be puzzling to some, and downright offensive to others.
No one, of course, is concerned about the words dairy science. Our field embraces a range of scientific disciplines nearly as broad as the spectrum of all agricultural sciences. And anyone who attends these meetings, even once, realizes that the activities of dairy science involve the universities, their teaching, extension, and research; the business and research undertaking of the entire dairy industry in production, processing, and distribution; and the action, extension, and research efforts in dairying of federal, state, and local governments.
