Dr. Dwight L. Espe was born October 1, 1900, near Storm Lake, Iowa. He spent several years in dairy farm management after graduating from Iowa State College in 1922. He then became foreman of the College Dairy Farm at Ames, Iowa. In 1927 he began graduate work in nutrition and physiology at Cornell University. After obtaining his Ph.D. degree in 1930, he spent 17 years on the dairy husbandry staff at Iowa State College. He was a member of the staff of the North Dakota Agricultural College for an additional two years. His college activities weredevoted principally to dairy research involving the physiology of milk secretion and ruminant digestion.
In 1949 Dr. Espe joined the staff of scientists in the Office of Experiment Stations, U.S. Department of Agriculture. He served as a specialist in the administration of dairy research grants until his retirement in 1965. He was the author of many research publications in his area of specialization and a member of a number of scientific organizations including the American Society of Animal Science, the American Dairy Science Association and the American Association of Physiologists.
