ABSTRACT
Twelve Guernsey cows were utilized in a 3 x 3 Latin-square to study the influence on milk production and milk composition of feeding 600 g per cow of either sodium acetate or propionate as part of a total ration composed of 65% corn silage and 35% concentrate mixture. Sodium acetate significantly increased total and 4% fat-corrected milk production and resulted in small but nonsignificant increases in milk fat and total solids. Sodium propionate decreased milk fat and increased solids-not-fat, but was without effect on total milk production. When these data were compared with results of similar data from other experiments, it was shown that the general effects of added acetate and propionate on milk production are not dependent upon level of nutrition of the cows.
