N. D. Bayley Appointed Director of Science and Education
On June 10 Dr. N. D. Bayley was appointed by Secretary O. L. Freeman as Director of Science and Education for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He has served as deputy director since August 1967. From 1961 to 1967, he was assistant director of the Animal Husbandry Research Division in the Agricultural Research Service.
In the new position, Dr. Bayley will coordinate scientific research and education activities, including relationships with Land-Grantcolleges and universities and other institutions outside of USDA involved in research and education. He will also be responsible for general supervision of the Agricultural Research Service, the Federal Extension Service, the Cooperative State Research Service, and the National Agricultural library.
Dr. Bayley received his B.S. degree from Michigan State University in 1949, his M.A. at the University of Minnesota in 1941, and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin in 1950. He also attended the graduate school of public administration at Harvard University.
