ABSTRACT

A pulsed-bed ion exchange contactor, designed by Chemical Separations Corp. for continuous operation, was constructed for these studies. Its performance was investigated and procedures for sanitary operation were developed. Several modifications of the original design were required for satisfactory sanitary operation. The most significant change was the use of hot (85 C) regenerating solution for simultaneous regeneration and sanitization of the continuously moving resin. Raw milk labeled with 85Sr was processed with the contactor, and 97% of the 85Sr was removed without appreciably altering the cationic composition of the milk. The contactor was operated tor 20 hours without degradation of performance or of microbiological quality of milk and resin.
