Problems Involved in Conducting a Statewide Mastitis Control Program

J. N. Maddux

Extension Dairy Science Department, University of Georgia, Athens

ABSTRACT

There are many problems involved in conducting a statewide milk quality control program. One of the first questions to be resolved is: Who will organize the program, establish standards, measure progress and revise goals as progress is made? In Georgia, the solution to this problem was sought from the Extension Dairy Science and Extension Veterinary Science Departments of the University of Georgia and the Dairy Section, Georgia Department of Agriculture. The answer resulted in the selection of a statewide milk quality control committee.

The second major problem question is: What agency or organization will administer the program? Such an agency should have:

  1. Adequate laboratory space, facilities and personnel.
  2. Adequately trained field technicians for the bulk screen testing of milk and sampling of bulk tanks for direct microscopic testing (DMC).
  3. A full-time veterinarian to supervise the the program, serving in a liaison position between the laboratory, the dairyman, the practicing veterinarian, the milking machine dealer-services and the milk quality control committee.
