ABSTRACT
The eradication of brucellosis from the Nation is a goal which will be achieved in the near future. Ten States have achieved Certified Brucellosis-Free status. More than 25% of the Nation's counties, 849 in 32 States plus the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, are Certified Brucellosis-Free. Over 90% of the counties in the country have reached or surpassed Modified Certified Brucellosis-Free status; that is, the rate of brucellosis has been reduced to less than 1% of the cattle in the area. Only 12 States have not yet achieved that status (Fig 1).
Procedures
There has been a marked change in program procedure since the program began. For the first several years, the program required a complete blood test of all animals in every herd in an area striving for certification. Then, through application of information gained from research, the brucellosis ring test was incorporated into the program, eliminating testing of individual animals in herds negative to the ring test.
