The Southern Division of the American Dairy Science Association Honors Theodore Russell Freeman for Distinguished Service to the Dairy Industry in the South

ABSTRACT

T. R. Freeman was born in West Plains, Missouri, on December 13, 1906, and was graduated from the West Plains High School in 1925. He earned a B.S. degree in dairy production from Kansas State University in 1929, an M.S. degree in dairy manufacturing from Oklahoma State University in 1933, and a Ph.D. degree in dairy manufacturing from Pennsylvania State University in 1937.

In between obtaining college degrees, he taught science in high school and was employed by a cooperative creamery in Kansas and an ice cream company in Oklahoma.

Dr. Freeman has held positions at Texas A&M (1937–1941) as an Instructor, Assistant Professor, and Associate Professor in dairy manufacturing; at the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station (1941–1946) as dairy technologist. Between 1946 and 1948 he became manager and part owner of Sunshine Dairy Products, Inc., at Gainesville, Florida. Since 1948 he has been associated with the University of Kentucky as a Professor of dairy manufacturing, where he initiated a research program and in 1958–1959 he served as acting head of the dairy department.
