ABSTRACT

This is the first comprehensive textbook written primarily on domestic animals for students in animal sciences, environmental biology, ecology, bioclimatological and physiological principles of adaptation; adaptive mechanisms under specific environments; comparative adaptation of several mammalian and avian species; and techniques used to measure physical, physiological and behavioral aspects of adaptation.

Section I, Ecological and Bioclimatological Aspects deals with principles of animal adaptation, world distribution of domestic animals, domestication and adaptation, (physical environment, morphological and anatomical adaptation, and environmental effects on animal productivity. Section II, Basic Physiological Mechanisms deals with thermoregulation, body fluid regulation, cardiovascular regulation, and biological rhythms. Section III, Adaptation to Specific Environments deals with genetic mechanisms in adaptation to high altitude, behavioral adaptation, and adaptation to stress and disease. Section IV, Species-Specific Adaptations deals with adaptation of cattle, sheep, goats, swine and poultry, as well as comparable functions of ruminants in hot environments. Section V, Techniques of Investigations deals with laboratory facilities for adaptation research, measurement of physical environment, measurement of physiological responses to environmental stimuli, measurement of productivity, behavoral measurement of social stress, measurement of behavioral adaptation, and biometrics and adaptation research.
