Professor Per Swartling 1915–1967

ABSTRACT

Professor Per Swartling, head of the newly-founded Food Research Institute, Alnarp, Sweden (formerly State Dairy Research Station), died on December 22, 1967. His was an outstanding career in dairy science and technology.

Per Swartling was born June 12, 1915, in Jönköping, Sweden. After finishing studies at the University of Lund he went to the State Dairy Research Station in Alnarp, where he worked several years as assistant in chemistry and then in microbiology. He was appointed Associate Professor in 1949 and Professor and Head of the Station in 1955.

Under his leadership much work was done at the Station, both in pure science and in dairy technology. In dairy chemistry many well-known papers appeared on analytical problems, and on fat oxidation, especially the role of the composition and reactions of the milk phospholipids. He was very interested in dairy microbiology and many papers were published on the quality of milk, including farm tank milk, on aseptic packaging of sterilized milk and on cheese bacteriology.
