ABSTRACT
A flow diversion valve with cleaned-in-place capability was recently offered to the dairy industry and we measured response time and pressure drop of one of these valves. Elapsed time between interruption of power to the valve solenoids and completion of the diversion movement (response time) was recorded with an oscillograph. Response times were 0.05 to 0.24 seconds for flow rates of 4,700 to 38,000 liters/hr. The only significant variation in response time resulted in changes in air supply pressure. Changes in flow rate and product pressure produced only minor changes in response time. Pressure drop across the valve in forward flow was 0.07, 0.11, 0.14, and 0.18 kg/cm2 for flows of 23,000, 28,000, 33,000, and 38,000 liters/hr of water, respectively. No operating difficulties were encountered and the performance of the valve satisfied the requirements of the U.S. Public Health Service's Pasteurized Milk Ordinance.
