ABSTRACT

On May 31, 1965, a purebred Guernsey heifer, 33 months of age, in the dairy herd of the University of Connecticut delivered a normal full-term female calf. The heifer showed no evidence of mammary proliferation. Her udder appeared as that of an unbred heifer. No milk was recovered by any means.

Normal estrous cycles did not occur after parturition. Therefore, estrus was induced with an injection of 50 mg of diethylstilbestrol on November 20, 1965, followed by conception to a service December 19, 1965. As the date for anticipated parturition approached, mammary development again was absent. She was treated on September 6, 1966, with 25 mg of diethylstilbestrol IM and 40 units of oxytocin IV twice daily in five treatments. On September 28, 1966, she delivered a normal full-term female calf. Udder development and milk production were completely absent. On January 18, 1967, the cow was slaughtered, at which time the udder and other organs were examined and sections obtained for histological study.
