Confidence Limits for Twin Efficiency Values1

ABSTRACT

Under the assumption of additive effects and normally distributed random errors, confidence limits for twin efficiency values (E) can be estimated. These limits are a function of the probability level desired, the estimate of E, and the number (n) of sets of twins on which the estimate of E is made. The 95% confidence limits for various values of n from 4 to 50 and E from 2 to 25 have been determined. For n <10 these limits are extremely wide. For example, with n = 6 and E = 10, the confidence limits are 2 and 67. The width of these limits does not decrease very rapidly with increasing n. Uniformity trials designed to provide sensitive estimates of E would be worth while if a relatively large number of twins were available.
