International Symposium: Training of United States and Foreign Nationals for Leadership in Dairying in Developing Nations

Graduate Training in the United States as Seen by a National from a Developing Country

Leopoldo S. Castillo1

University of the Philippines

ABSTRACT

The last decade or so has revealed interesting developments in many U.S. land grant colleges with respect to training graduate students, especially from developing countries. Whereas before, only a few colleges had an organized interest in graduate students from developing countries, there are about 25 land grant colleges with some kind of program in this area. Although these programs or offices in American universities are known by various names, a few of which are quite sophisticated, all are pointed toward development of effective graduate training primarily for the participants from these countries. A few examples of these programs are as follows: International Agricultural Development of Cornell; International Program in Agriculture of California and Indiana; International Program of Hawaii, New Jersey, Texas, Wyoming, West Virginia, and Colorado; Center for Tropical Agriculture of Florida; International Agricultural Activities of Pennsylvania; the more intellectually appealing title of "Technical Assistance Programs for the Center for Developmental Change" of Kentucky, as well as the many other university programs in foreign agriculture which are just as important as those mentioned.
