National Institute of Animal Industry, Chiba-shi, Japan

ABSTRACT

A new procedure has been developed in which all volatile fatty acids (VFA) are extracted from ruminal fluid in the presence of an acidic hygroscopic adsorbent with acetone:ether (99:1 v/v) containing crotonic acid as an internal standard. Preparation of the extract and its analysis by gas liquid chromatography permitted determination of the total molar equivalent and molar proportions of VFA in less than 30 minutes.
