Observations on the Size of Bovine Ova1

ABSTRACT

The average outside diameter (including the zona pellucida) of 29 unfertilized cow ova was 171.5 ± 13.8 µ (SD). The zona was 13.4 ± 1.4 µ thick and the diameter of the vitellus averaged 120.2 ± 6.9 µ. The average ouside diameter of 46 fertilized ova was 166.4 ± 16.1 µ. The vitelli of unfertilized ova were responsive to osmotic pressure changes.
