ABSTRACT

Science for Better Living

On October 20, 1968, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced publication of the 1968 Yearbook of Agriculture, Science for Better Living. The book contains 83 illustrated short articles by Federal, State, and industry scientists on research achievements, mostly in the last five years.

Research developments on which the book reports include the growing of embryos in culture and the technique of embryo transfer, hormonal control of estrus, advantages of crossbreeding in beef production, automatic systems for mixing and distributing livestock rations, the key role of vitamin E in controlling oxidized milk flavor, the Nobel Prize-winning work of the USDA-Cornell research team which for the first time determined the structure of nucleic acid, and many more.
