Feed intake in dairy cattle involves a number of questions which are unsolved. The Author has investigated the daily feed intake and related traits during winter feeding, totaling 214,000 feed days of 451 Black and White cows with 1,142 lactations. Of these cows, 55 were tested continually from the first to the fourth lactation. Daily water intake of 83 cows with 200 lactations was analyzed.
The analyses are concerned with feed intake (11 different base rations), nutrient intake (on the basis of feed analysis; protein, starch units, dry matter, fiber and ballast), nutrient requirements per kilogram milk produced, feed conversion and feed cost. The influence of the following factors was investigated: Age of cows, stage of lactation, weight, body measurements, milk yield, source and quality of feed and amount of concentrates fed.
