Location, Extraction, and Removal of Endrin Residues on Alfalfa Hay

T. E. Archer

Agricultural Toxicology and Residue Research Laboratory, University of California, Davis

ABSTRACT

Endrin residues on alfalfa hay (9% moisture) were not removed by washing with hot or cold water. Oven heat removed approximately 35% of the endrin residue at this moisture content, but the residue removal was increased to 73% when the hay was saturated with water and heated. The residue was mainly in the wax-like materials of the plant cuticle. Endrin was almost completely removed by vapor washing with common solvents (benzene, 93%; water, 93%). The residue was correlated with respect to the plant surface area.
