ABSTRACT

Emeritus Status for P. K. Bates

• Dr. Philip K. Bates has retired as Director of the Research and Development Laboratories for the Carnation Company at Van Nuys, California. He was appointed to this position in 1952.

Dr. Bates received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1924 and 1929, respectively. He held several teaching positions at this institution, at Tufts Medical and Dental School, and at the Boston School of Medicine.

Few persons have had such a broad background of industrial, teaching, and research experiences. His first industrial position was with the Frigidaire Corporation, where he organized a laboratory to evaluate food preservation in domestic and commercial refrigerators. He published some of the earliest reports on the bacteriological quality of frozen foods. He was head of the laboratories for the Rexall Drug Company, and was the first president of Ricker Laboratories, a pharmaceutical subsidiary of Rexall's.

Dr. Bates' leadership at Carnation has been distinguished by progress in developing new dairy products, new cereal products, pet foods, and vegetable products.
