ABSTRACT
Tung meal is a potential source of protein for animal feeds. This product contains between 25 and 30% crude protein as it comes from the screw presses of a tung mill. However, untreated tung meal has been shown to be toxic to chicks, and preliminary work on detoxification has been carried out by the Southern Regional Research Laboratory, USDA (3). Treated meal gave encouraging results, as compared to untreated meals when included in chick rations. However, no treatment resulted in a meal comparable to soybean meal, as measured by response in chicks. Barrentine (2) found that ammonia-treated tung meal was not toxic when fed in a ration to young pigs, but appeared poor in palatability.
Objectives of the present study were to test the acceptability and value of three treated tung meals when included in calf rations.
Experimental Procedure
Preparation of meals. Tung meal was taken directlj' from screw presses. It was then ground through a hammermill and used to prepare three different treated meals.
