ABSTRACT
Raw sheet silastic with dacron mesh2 (.60 mm) can be quickly molded into flexible low-cost cannulas for experimental animals. The two larger cannulas in Figure 1 were molded around 10- and 100-ml graduated cylinders. The two smaller ones were made by attaching a base piece to short lengths of silastic tubing. Vulcanization is achieved by baking in an oven set at 150 C for 5 min or longer. The tissue reaction to silastic is the least of known implantable materials. Tests to date with these cannulas indicate equal or better performance than Tygon (1), much lower cost, and greater variety of application.
Cost of materials: 10 to 50.
Molding time: 5 to 15 min.
