ABSTRACT

Emeritus Status to B. M. Zakariasen

Ben M. Zakariasen, Manager of Laboratories and Field Services for Land O'Lakes Creameries, Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota, the largest cooperative dairy products marketing organization in the world, retired on October 1st.

The son of immigrant Norwegian parents, he was reared on a dairy farm, in Brainerd, Minnesota. He has been closely associated with the dairy industry.

He graduated from the School of Agriculture in 1921, earned the B.S. degree in 1925, and the M.S. degree in 1937 from the University of Minnesota.

In 1924 he was appointed chemist in the Land O'Lakes Creameries, Inc. This small analytical laboratory where butter was analyzed for fat, salt, moisture, and microorganisms was the beginning of a bacteriological and chemical control system that involved many phases of quality control in the Land O'Lakes organization. During 1920–1935 much applied and basic research was done to control the mold, yeast, and cheesy flavors in butter.
