George M. Werner 1898–1967

ABSTRACT

George M. Werner, emeritus professor of dairy science at the University of Wisconsin, died January 27th at Clearwater, Florida.

Professor Werner began his long and distinguished career in 1920 as an official test supervisor at the University of Wisconsin. From 1923 to 1939 he was associated with the University dairy herd, first as a milker, next as foreman, and finally as chief herdsman. During these years he worked closely with the research staff in the department of dairy science. In 1939 he was appointed extension dairyman, a position in which he made significant contributions to the dairy industry in Wisconsin and the nation.

George Werner is best known for his leadership in two general areas. In 1939 he assisted in organizing in Wisconsin an artificial breeding program which became the model for later programs. In 1949 he organized clinics on roughage evaluation for dairy cattle. These clinics became annual events in all Wisconsin counties.
