Charles R. Gearhart 1893–1967

ABSTRACT

Charles R. Gearhart, Professor Emeritus of Dairy Science at the Pennsylvania State University, died June 3, 1967, in Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, Florida, at the age of 74. Funeral services were held June 7 at the Salem Church of Christ, Gilbert, Pennsylvania.

A native of Effort, Pennsylvania, he graduated in 1920 from the University of Missouri. After three years as extension dairy specialist at Kansas State College, he took a similar position at the Pennsylvania State University in 1923. In this capacity, he led the Dairy Herd Improvement Association program until retirement in April, 1955. One of his many outstanding contributions to this program in Pennsylvania and the nation was his efforts to secure supervisors through the 1-W program during World War II. Over 2,300 students attended short courses conducted by him to train supervisors.

Following retirement from the University, he served four years as dairy advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture in Turkey, working under the United States Foreign Operations Administration. Since his return from this assignment, Charles and Mrs. Gearhart have lived in Santa Maria, Florida.
