ABSTRACT
The small-scale silo can be a valuable part of a screening program for potential silage crops or for silage additives. Our silage storage consisted of 91 m.t. or greater silos for long trials and 7 m.t. silos for shorter trials. A need existed for a small scale silo of about 45 kg capacity. The Allred-Kennedy (1) silo seemed to be suitable for this purpose and was constructed. Later, this silo was modified to make it easier to handle, and is the subject of this report.
Materials. The modified silo is shown in Figure 1. The rack is similar to that described by Allred and Kennedy (1). The silos sit astride 50 x 102 mm wood supports easily moved at any time throughout the ensiling process.
The metal tanks were 30 cm in diameter and 122 cm deep. They were easily constructed from discarded galvanized hot-water tanks by cutting off the tops.
