Influence of a Poor-Quality Low-Energy Ration on Lipolytic Activity in Milk1

Department of Dairy Science, Louisiana State University Agricultural Experiment Station, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

ABSTRACT

Four Holstein cows were placed for 8 wk on a ration composed of 47% cottonseed hulls, 40% cottonseed meal, 10% molasses, 2% bonemeal, 1% salt, and 2.3 kg of very poor quality native hay per day. Four similar Holstein cows were kept on the regular herd ration as the control group. Feeding rates of the experimental ration were at a level to provide only 50% of the energy requirements for maintenance and milk production. Susceptibilities of milk from these animals to spontaneous- and agitation-induced rancidity were compared to milk from animals on normal herd ration. Average mean difference between induced and initial ADV's in the milk was 1.34 for the experimental cows and 0.99 for the controls, which was significant, P<0.05. Average mean difference between induced and spontaneous ADV's in the milk was 0.83 for the experimental cows and 0.51 for the controls, which was significant, P<0.05.
