Effect of Intravenous Infusion of Propionate or Glucose on Bovine Milk Composition

L. J. Fisher1 and J. M. Elliot

Department of Animal Science, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York

ABSTRACT

Six Jersey cows were employed in an experiment in which propionate and glucose were infused singly at two levels as supplements to a basal ration of hay and concentrates. Both of these metabolites depressed the per cent fat and increased the per cent lactose in milk. On an equicaloric basis glucose was more effective than propionate in reducing fat test.
