Effect of Age and Number of Calvings on Histological Characteristics of the Bovine Uterus 1

Richard Mochow and Durward Olds

Department of Dairy Science, University of Kentucky, Lexington

ABSTRACT

Uterine tissue sections of 110 repeat-breeding cows were studied for the relationship between age and number of calvings on total uterine thickness, muscle thickness, mucosal thickness, number of gland cross sections per square millimeter, and gland diameter. It was found that 30% of the variation in muscle thickness was due to age, independent of number of calvings. Variation in gland cross section numbers was due to individual cow differences, with no significant effect due to age or number of calvings. Likewise, variation in gland diameter was associated with individual cow differences and differences within an individual cross section.

Comment is made on cystic uterine glands, enlarged secretory glands, and elastotic uterine vessels.
