ABSTRACT
Six alfalfa silages preserved with tylosin (2.2 or 11.0 mg/kg) were compared with six control silages over a 3-yr period involving feeding trials with 100 heifers fed only silage and minerals. Tylosin preservation inhibited secondary fermentation of lactic acid to acetic acid and increased the average daily gain with three of the six paired silages. In two failures there were only small depressions in gain associated with tylosin preservation and, in the other case of depression, the silage had been inoculated with a tylosin-resistant culture. Excluding this inoculated silage, tylosin preservation increased gains 17%.
