Effect of Vitamin D3 on Milk Yield of Thyroparathyroidectomized Rats1

L. S. Srivastava and C. W. Turner

Department of Dairy Husbandry, University of Missouri, Columbia

ABSTRACT

In a previous study it was shown that normal lactation could be maintained in thyroparathyroidectomized rats when 3 µg L-thyroxine/100 g body weight was administered in conjunction with Vitamin D2 (calciferol) at a level of 0.2 mg/100 g b.w./day. In the present study it was shown that Vitamin D3 at the same level (8,000 IU or 0.2 mg) per day was equally effective in maintaining normal milk yields on Days 14, 16, 18, and 20 in conjunction with L-thyroxine.
