ABSTRACT
The transport of glycine, as glycine-1-C14, across the cell membrane of washed bovine spermatozoa has been studied. It was demonstrated that glycine transport was sensitive to incubation temperature and to metabolic inhibitors. Incubation with unlabeled glucose and with 2,4-dinitrophenol established an energy requirement for transport of glycine. Competition by glucose, glutamate, arginine, and proline was observed, and concentration against an osmotic gradient occurred both in air and under anoxic conditions. An active transport system was indicated, but the inhibitor and temperature effects suggested that other processes, such as passive diffusion, account for some glycine transfer.
