ABSTRACT
A surgical procedure for making a permanent exteriorized loop in the carotid artery of the bovine is described.
Eight of nine operations were successful and the vessels remained in place even under frequent bleeding. It was found that animals could be trained for sampling from the carotid loop with much less disturbance than by rectal puncture of the internal iliac, prepubic or the middle coccygeal arteries. Thus, sampling from the carotid gave much more reliable values for detecting respiratory alkalosis in cattle under heat stress.
