Variations in Bovine Plasma A-Esterase Activity and the Relationship between Plasma and Milk A-Esterase Activities1, 2,

ABSTRACT

The distribution of plasma A-esterase levels for 83 cows selected from one herd was determined. Some of these values (n = 61) were related with corresponding milk A-esterase levels. Considerable inter- and intrabreed variations in plasma A-esterase levels were observed. Holsteins as a group tended to have higher plasma activities (

= 152 enzyme units, n = 37) than Jerseys and Guernseys (

= 98, n = 19, and
Figure 3
= 110, n = 27, respectively). The standard deviations for plasma A-esterase levels among Holsteins, Jerseys, and Guernseys were 27, 21, and 28 enzyme units, respectively. The average standard deviation in plasma A-esterase levels within individual cows during a four-month period was 12 enzyme units. Milk and plasma A-esterase levels were related (r = 0.56 for 51 cows from three breeds; r = 0.23, n = 26 for Holsteins; r = 0.48, n = 17 for Jerseys; and r = 0.18, n = 18 for Guernseys). The average plasma-to-milk A-esterase ratio was 1,800:1.
