ABSTRACT
Whenever the bacterial count affects the classification of the product, accuracy in counting is extremely important. The following technique permits group instruction in counting bacterial colonies on agar plates.
Incubated plates are placed on an overhead projector. The one we used was a Master Vu-Graph Cat. No. 6600 made by Charles Beseler Company, East Orange, New Jersey. Other overhead projectors should be equally adaptable.
Visible colonies are projected on a screen. Rules for counting bacteria as outlined in the eleventh edition of Standard Methods for the Examination of Dairy Products are discussed and practiced by the class.
