Intramammary Pressures between Milkings in the Lactating Cow1

ABSTRACT

Intramammary pressures (IMP) were studied between milkings in 11 lactating cows. Continuous recording of IMP after initial cannulation permitted observation of IMP changes in the absence of milk ejection. The data showed a gradual increase in IMP over the entire recording period. In 9 of 11 cows the IMP did not exceed 12 mm Hg at 12 hr after milking. In two cows the IMP was 18 and 22 mm Hg at 12 hr after milking. Continuous recording without repeated cannulation and subsequent milk ejection probably accounted for IMP lower than those reported in other studies.
