ABSTRACT
LOW-TEMPERATURE TECHNIQUES, A. C. Rose-limes, D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc., 120 Alexander Street, Princeton, New Jersey. Price $4.75.
This book is intended for investigators who want to do experiments at low temperatures, but who are not specialists. The author has shown that experiments can be performed near Absolute Zero with liquid helium and simple apparatus. He has written in a practical and applied way and has emphasized principles, leaving details of design of equipment to the cryogenic specialists.
This book is especially timely because of the recent advent of practical helium liquefiers, making possible helium storage in metal Dewar flasks for use in low-temperature research.
Rose-Innes has organized his book into the following chapters:
Chapter I. Introduction which contains general statements concerning use of helium.
Chapter II. Storage and distribution of helium, including storage vessels, evaporation rate, enthalpy latent heat, and storage.
Chapter III. Cryostats and design of apparatus including kinds of cryostats, Dewar vessels, temperature gradients, precooling, handling of helium apparatus design, vacuum technique, and heat conduction.
