Method of Sire Evaluation for Milk Production on Indian Farms

D. Sundaresan1, T. R. Puri and M. Gurnani

National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, India

ABSTRACT

Several methods of evaluating the breeding value of bulls are in use. Sundaresan et al. (3) evaluated the breeding value of Tharparkar and Sahiwal bulls of the N.D.R.I. herd, using five of the sire evaluation methods. In view of the situation, that often under Indian farm conditions evaluation of bulls will have to be made with information from very few daughters and from records subjected to serious environmental differences, an index
Figure 1
-b(M-Cm{Lambda}) has been developed combining the desirable features from two of the five indices used in the earlier study. This index, called Dairysearch Method, was used to evaluate the breeding value of bulls used in the Tharparkar and Sahiwal herds, for milk production.
