ABSTRACT
Conclusions: This work indicated that the Golding bead method is suitable for estimating the SNF content of individual cow's milk under field conditions. However, it seems advisable that a program of quality control be followed whereby the beads in use are checked at regular intervals.
More that 99% of the beads checked were within ± .0005 of their supposed specific gravity. There was no evident change in density with age after purchase or with use of the beads. Considering the variability of single observations, the method seems comparable to the traditionally accepted Babcock method for determination of milk fat percentages. There was no apparent bias in estimation of SNF content when compared with results obtained under laboratory conditions.
