Symposium: Dairy Science Education

Educational Objectives in the Agricultural Sciences

George A. Gries

Department of Plant Pathology, University of Arizona, Tucson

ABSTRACT

It is a pleasure for me to speak to you on the subject Educational Objectives in the Agricultural Sciences. I hope to bring some ideas that will be of interest to you and perhaps some thoughts to stimulate your imaginations. As Dr. Arbuckle indicated, I am a member of the Committee on Educational Policy in Agriculture, better known as CEPA. It is in this capacity, rather than because of any special abilities of my own, that I have been asked to speak. Among the members of CEPA I am considered somewhat of a renegade, so anything I say should not be interpreted as official doctrine of the Committee as a whole. Also, I may even play devil's advocate and argue for points I don't wholly believe myself.

Why is there a Committee on Educational Policy in Agriculture? Several years ago members of the National Academy of Science—National Research Council took a critical look at agriculture and agricultural colleges.
