ABSTRACT
Conclusions: These data indicate that when more than two choices are offered in a cafeteria type of experiment, results may give biased estimates of the relative palatability of any of the feeds. Thus, it is recommended that when reasonably precise and unbiased data are needed only two feeds be included in a cafeteria experiment. Other studies have shown that most calves tend to be quite uniform in their choices over a period of time (2). Thus, generally shorter time periods would be much more desirable than using several feeds with the same animals simultaneously. Because of the variability among individuals a sufficient number of animals should be used.
